Some time ago, on either Noisetrade or Bandcamp, I came across compilations from the Independent Music Awards - https://independentmusicawards.com/ - (Amazon has them, too). One or the other sites, or maybe it is CDbaby.com, offers several free downloads from individual years (think it is 2012, 13 and 14 - and wonderfully these are downloads of a lot of songs). The newer years are only lists or if lucky, playlists.
I think the 2017 list is cut down from something like 330 songs, down to like 75.
I then went over to Spotify and found playlists of the last couple of years and that is where I heard this guy's song. I'm a cheap bastard, so I use the free version of Spotify. There are playlists by Songpickr that are really good and carefully selected.
What I use to really like about CMJ New Music, Spin, Paste and Under The Radar, was how they would send out compilation cds and I would listen to them and rate the longs for ripping on the PC. Paste has resumed a monthly compilation available at Noisetrade (Paste bought out Noisetrade) and UTR allows readers to download a compilation (unfortunately, UTR has now went to publishing three times a year).
Songwriter magazine used to offer great downloads, but has since went to playlists.
Oh, then there is also Relix.
