The bizarre thing about racism in America to me is that there are some aspects of it that are thrown out into the public realm with absolutely no shame at all and then there are other aspects that have receded a bit or go sort of unspoken. It's kind of hard to adequately explain and somewhat scary and troubling to think of, too. The scary part is those people that have absolutely no compunction in declaring their racism as a virtue and even claim it as their valid birthright. Here's another way to think of it - back in the 70s there was a whole line of joke books all along ethnic lines (recall 2000 Polish Joke and then, 2000 More Polish Jokes - I still have both copies). Today, I do not know if those books could be published.
