I worried a little there might be pro Trump generals, but when Trump appointee, Mark Esper came out and reinforced Matis's position, with his own opinion on the church clearing episode, either before or after Matis's became public, I quit worrying.

Perhaps nearly 250 years of bumpy road democracy has ingrained us with more of an anti authoritarianism inclination than my worry of fragility last year considered.

A little aside.  When Nixon did away with the military draft, I worried that one day a President could take over command of a what would then be considered a mercenary force willing to do his bidding.

I thought drafted soldiers  would be less likely to fire on fellow citizens than a voluntary force.
