I am not the remotest bit surprised that Gustave had many children. My guess is that they're all to different mothers as well judging by the number of female names in his little black book. It's a shame he didn't look after them.

I have plenty of other US WWI people for you to investigate if you're keen and no John Smiths! In fact, most of them seem to be of Scandinavian descent.
