IN MY ROOM-September 2003
1.)Hello Starling-Josh Ritter, didn’t think Josh could top his last record so soon. This album is the type of record Dylan and Cohen were making in their prime.
2.)So Much For The City-The Thrills, the most hyped, praised, talked about band on the planet and it still hasn’t been released in the states. For all of the overblown circus style praise this band gets, it’s still hard not to like these clever lads.
3.)Soft Spot-Clem Snide, such a warm and tender alt. country album by New York’s finest. So glad Eet Barzelay found love and fathered a child. I’ve worn out this CD!
4.)Old Low Light-Kathryn Williams, this album came out last year in the UK, Why I waited so long to buy it, I’ll never understand. If you love old Joni records and dig the new ones by Kate Rusby, this is a must!
5.)Befriended-The Innocence Mission, another beautiful recording by this Lancaster, PA band. I will admit though, that Karen’s vocals are a little redundant on this record. It would have been nice to see her use a little of her range.
6.)Four Thousand Seven Hundred…-Teenage Fanclub, please people, buy this record. This collection of mainly singles, is 4766 seconds of pure guitar pop bliss!
7.)1000 Kisses-Patty Griffin, I love them all, but "Making Pies" and her cover of "Stolen Car" make this my favorite Patty disc.
8.)Soul Journey-Gillian Welch, the circle will never be unbroken as long as we have this little lady around.
9.)The Grotto-Kristen Hersh, could wind up as my album of the year, I never get sick of playing it.
10.) Philadelphia Songs-Denison Witmer, to damn short! I remember when the trend was to make real long CD’s Now I’ve noticed that a good number of my current CD’s are less then 45 min , but this disc is only around 31. Needs a couple of more upbeat tracks to balance it out.
Bubbling Under: Lizzie West, Annie Lennox, Beth Orton, Paul Weller, and Turin Brakes.
This month the new Sinead O’Connor 2 disc collection of rare tracks and B-sides see’s the light of day as well Natalie Merchant’s folk record, Beth Orton’s greatest hits (import) and the excellent Irish singer/songwriter, David Kitt long awaited third release (import).
I saw "American Splendor"on Labor Day, it rocks, what a refreshing little flick.
Cheers, Kevin
