Re: sound quality. Spotify uses some type of lossy compression - like mp3 to deliver audio. Although usually not noticeable to most people - certain songs / instruments play less nice with compression. For me - cymbals are one that is easy to hear the compression. The reason for this is speed at starting playback and reducing overall bandwidth.
Other services use compression as well - but some - Tidal, Qubuz, Amazon, Apple - offer lossless streaming. This is more or less like playing a CD - or better. As with things like this - most (if not all) people can't hear any difference above CD quality. This is leaving the vinyl discussion aside.
So this is what Neil is referring to.
