I'd just never heard about Abe getting cancelled so I wondered what that was about. 

There was no movement that I could find that anybody actually wanted to do that. No politicians trying to institute policy to get rid of Abe. It just seemed, from what I read, there were a few nutters out there defacing Lincoln statues. 

I think it goes to the article Peter posted about being able to spread nonsense so quickly that by the time you attempt to correct it, well, there are a million people that believe it and they are telling all of their friends. 

The CRT thing is my go to example because it went from something nobody was talking about to the tip of every right wing nut's tongue in just a matter of days really. All thanks to Matt Gaetz asking a general about it as a way to slam the military. Suddenly, you had people claiming it was being taught in public schools. It never was. You can't get that toothpaste back in the tube though and the people that believe it...well...they want to believe it. 

This is the FOX news defense of why they lied to their viewers...they didn't want to lie, they claim, but their viewers would get upset and not watch them if they didn't lie. So, rather than risk losing viewers, they told them the lies they wanted to hear. 

Weird defense, but according to Rupert and FOX heads, they believed their job was not to bring the facts and truth to their viewers, it was to "service them" by telling them the things they wanted to hear. That made FOX money and made their viewers happy...or perhaps not happy but told them what they needed to hear so they could be outraged.
