I try to remember that the average person doesn't want policy papers, or a serious discussion of the nuances of issues; they need a simple narrative that hits them on an emotional level. Trump provides these along with a tribal identity that lets them feel that they are part of something larger than themselves. In their minds, they aren't mediocre nobodies; they are the 21st century equivalent of the minutemen at Lexington and Concord. When you're in a cult, you don't realize that you are.
