So, let's just keep it simple. While Trump still dominates the media landscape and the Republican party, and is crushing his absolutely awful Republican opponents that are running against him for president...well...his numbers for the general election, running against Biden or any Democrat opponent really stink. We don't even need to name a Democrat running against Trump because pretty much any of them would beat him. Here is exactly why:
Trump has already lost 77% of Independent voters. Those numbers continue to climb. So by the time we hit 2024, that will likely be over 80% which slaughters Trump being able to win.
Trump has lost, for good, between 22 and 27% of Republican voters. That could climb to over 30% by the time we hit 2024. Trump can't afford to lose any Republican voters and yet, he refuses to try to appeal to anybody except the 35% or so of Republicans that make up the MAGA base. More and more Republicans are finding him a total disgrace and won't vote for him. Not saying those voters will vote for Biden, but it does not matter really. Some will the others will just not vote for Trump putting him further behind the 8 ball.
Of course, Trump has lost almost all the support he had from Democratic voters. You have to keep in mind that there were Democrats that voted for Obama that voted for Trump in 2016. Trump has lost those people though.
These are disastrous numbers if your goal is to try to win a general election. It points toward the Democrat absolutely wiping the floor with the Donald. Bad, bad news for the Republican party.
Biden may be a horribly weak candidate, as is Kamala Harris (and I think based on things I have seen, she will be the Biden replacement if he ends up stepping aside), but Trump is so horrible he has little chance against either.
I wish the Democrats had taken the opportunity to get behind another candidate. Robert Kennedy Jr. crushes all comers against Republicans. Gavin Newsome maybe would as well. Biden and Harris will be nailbiters in as much as if the Republicans manage to get Trump out of the way, any of the other Republican candidates could give them a serious run for their money, except DeSantis of course.
So, what do I think the Republican strategy is? Well, first you have to consider that most elected Republicans are totally gutless when it comes to Trump, so they will not speak out against him publicly, only behind closed doors. They may mount several 14th Amendment challenges but they are likely a longshot to remove Trump. What I think they will do is let Trump run, watch him lose again, and then hope he goes away and they can shift the focus elsewhere. We are of course talking about Donald Trump, he will not allow the Republicans to take the focus away from him. He will scream bloody murder that 2024 was rigged and continue to threaten Republicans who won't support that lie.
So, unless there are a majority of Republicans that go public with the truth about Trump, they are going to be stuck with the guy until he drops dead. They can pray Jack Smith takes Trump down in March, and I really think that is what they are hoping for, but I expect silence from most of them. Hell, even the other Republicans that are running for president, except for Christie and Hutchinson, won't go at him hard. I don't get that because if you are a really longshot to beat him your only hope is to start pointing out how horrible he is...for the country and your party. Christie is the only guy they can get to do that?
The Democrats have moved to punish any Democrats that run against Biden. They have chosen to circle the wagons around Biden and Harris, no exceptions. This was a problem in 2016 when they did the same thing with Hillary Clinton, even having Biden step aside then. Neither Biden nor Harris is as bad nor divisive a candidate but man, their favorability numbers stink. Not sure why for Biden, outside his age, he has done a pretty good job with domestic policy which seems to be what most people care about.
The one thing I do fear with Biden is his age. So, there has to be a back-up plan in place and from what I have seen and heard, the back-up is Harris and the DNC is all in on that. I think they see the opportunity if Trump is the Republican candidate to be able to win with Kamala. That's probably true...but...if the Republicans do manage to dump Trump, well, Harris is going to be in a major battle that will be pretty tight I think.
All of these thoughts are based upon there not being a major challenge from a third party candidate that drains votes from either of the major parties. If that happens, well, Trump does come into play. He would need a lot Democrats and Independents to shift to the third party candidate but in times like this...that could happen.
