I've seen Anne Nelson interviewed previously, David, and we all owe her a debt of gratitude for shining a light on this well funded, well organized, and often successful cabal. I'm struck by a few things.
In some respects, the CNP types have lost the culture war, or have they?. Their efforts in funneling Federalist Society-vetted judges to the judicial branch, and the resulting Dobbs decision, have been wildly, and I'd say chillingly successful. Long established union and worker's rights, voting rights, LGBT rights, and environmental protections, are under attack.
It's interesting how some within the CNP are clearly more motivated for business reasons like low taxes, no regulations, and anti-union, while the hyper social conservative religious types have other priorities, not that they probably mind what the business crowd are pursuing. It's an interesting umbrella group for sure.
Given the rise of the "nones" we're clearly a more secular country but nones are by nature not joiners and don't congregate on Sunday like the conservative religious continue to do. The CNP know that those local congregations and their pastors provide a powerful means to get their message out, and then get the flock to the polls!
I include David French among the thoughtful, high profile evangelical Christians in the media. And on the Roman Catholic side of the aisle, there's Andrew Sullivan. There may be an internecine battle among the religious but I sense the moderate voices won't gain much traction.
And a real YIKES as I see that General William "I knew that my God was bigger than his" Boykin is still kicking around.
