Not long before I left LA I had an interesting assignment from old friend and colleague Larry Klein... take melodies from Charlie Parker's catalog, and write biographical lyrics to it, with the intention of creating a staged show around the concept. I think I wrote some pretty damn good lyrics for it, and not an easy task, given the rhythmical complexities in his music and my grim determination not to succumb to the cliches of vocalese.
