This book was an eye-opener for me as it demonstrated that seemingly ordinary men could readily be transformed into mass killers. And the "intimacy" of their barbarism was especially shocking. Initially, most recoiled at the orders, but the fairly quick acclimation to the barbarism, aided by liquor, peer pressure, and for some, the antisemitism and simple adrenaline rush, makes me wonder if similar types are among us, and in large numbers.
