I have to assume that Julia inherited her father's facility with languages...or I married a spy.

On one of our trips through Europe we are travelling around and I know Julia spoke French like a Parisian and was fluent in Spanish but here we are in Italy, I am married to this woman, and we walk into our hotel and Julia walks up to this woman and starts conversing with her in Italian. I am listening to this thinking, what the hell? So, when she finishes, I say "I didn't know you spoke Italian." and she says "Oh, its a lot like French so easy to pick-up." and I said "You became fluent in Italian on the way from the airport?"

She says, "No, I've heard Italian before." and I let this go. You know, those romance languages having a lot of things in common.

Next we are in Germany. In Munich walking around. We had been there, I don't know a couple hours. Checked into a hotel and went out to take a walk. She says, I need to stop at this store, a drug store. We walk in, I am wandering around just waiting for her because I just want to get to a beer garden or something and suddenly I overhear her talking to the girl behind the counter...in full on fluent German. I am like "WTF!"

So, we go outside and I say "You were just speaking German with that woman."

"Yes." she says.

I ask "How is that possible?"

She says "I took a little German in school."

"And it just comes back like that? Like you have been speaking it your whole life?"

She says "Well, I picked some things up listening."

And say "Over the last hour? That's ridiculous!"

Now I am very suspicious. I mean I am married to this woman and she is just pulling various languages out of her hat like it is no big deal.

We go to Austria next, they speak German there but they have some unique words and things they say. So, what happens? Again she just starts talking to people, using the correct greetings, understanding even the words unique to Austrian German.

I said, "So you just picked that stuff up?" and she says "Yes." and I say "Great."
