I never met him, but we had many mutual friends, and nobody had anything but the most wonderful things to say about him—his pure passion for the nitty gritty of record-making, and his genuine kindness and wit and empathy and compassion. He was instrumental in so many things, including Kate Bush's epic Running Up the Hill. I can't remember who told me the story, it may have been Perry Watts-Russell, but Wallinger in that episode yet again proved himself to be a man of deep generosity and graciousness and taste. Another reminder that often the good die young, some more than others.
