I am 59 and in my life, I have never met a celebrity in person - not an actor, sportsperson, singer, or other. The closest I ever got to one was in the same college auditorium when Bruce Springsteen was doing his Tom Joad auditorium concerts.
Probably, the closest I ever got to someone in a major authoritarian role was that of a general in the army as he was defiling a wooden, three-seat shitter in a Middle East desert as I and another soldier were pulling out cut-off barrels of feces and urine to burn. (One of us remarked how we bet no fucking officer ever had to burn feces, urine, and sanitary products - which were pure hell to incinerate - just as he emerged and put on a helmet that had a glaring silver star on it). Oh, I have met with mayors and administrators in the past because of union activities, but that is about it.
I bring all this up because those in my family do not understand the appeal of the DBIS to me. They were really confused when I mentioned how I may have the opportunity to meet a fellow DBISer in person later in the year due to some remarkable circumstances (I still hope it does happen). In their bewilderment, they just couldn't grasp why I would like to do that and to them, it sounded weird.
It's like these stories that are being shared by David himself and what it is like to interact (somewhat) with someone you have admired for years. Not only that, this experience is complimented when one realizes the specialty of the person being followed, especially under such unique circumstances as the DBIS.
And all of this is one of the reasons why I enjoy these stories so much. It's like walking into some unknown bar and learning a very interesting, well-known person frequents the same place so long as it is kept quiet. I bet that many of us would be shocked at the people David has met in his life - he's probably like Mark Laita from Soft White Underbelly in the variety of people most likely encountered over the years (which I highly recommend viewing his channel on YouTube - and one bizarre thing is, I am shocked at how little mention he gets and would think his interviews would be right up the alley of DBIS fans).
Anyway....let's all hope for a good day......and wish that Andi doesn't have too bad of a hangover......
