I take your point David that during these hyper-polarized times, where we don't just criticize each other's perspectives, beliefs, and ideas, we question motives and gleefully demonize each other, few people will follow Dennett's rules of engagement. Too often, one's identity is inseparable from one's beliefs, and there are few greater fears than the loss of one's identity, banishment from one's tribe, and loss of face, especially for guys.

So, if conversation won't work, there's violence, but America absolutely mustn't go further down that path! We best win at the ballot box.
