This is kind of an extension of the digital/analog discussions about sound quality. In my experience with friends and relatives if you've never heard physical media through a decent (not even good) system you really don't appreciate the difference. Earbuds just don't cut it for separation and depth - the 3D effect of a well mixed and mastered recording - and don't get me started on compression. Alas, most people aren't that deeply into music - earbuds and a cellphone are enough. Streaming for free cheapens the experience that much more - there's no investment.
