Yes, I'm talking about Georgia, of course. And yes, I'm talking about Paulding County but O. M. G. what I witnessed this weekend was something that I have not seen before in the scant 8 years that I have been involved in Paulding County politics.
First some background: Every second Saturday, Paulding Dems hold a Dining with Dems event where we invite local candidates to come speak to fellow democrats. We also just get together and enjoy, for once, being around people we can relate to and speak our minds to. We usually have anywhere from 8 to MAYBE 18 people on a really good 2nd Saturday.
This past Saturday was the first Dining with Dems event that we had since Kamala became the nominee and therefore, since Walz had joined the ticket. I drove up to the restaurant about 25 minutes late only to be stopped in the parking lot by all of these people walking across the parking from another restaurant. They were not people I recognized, but they kept coming and coming and coming. Finally, I saw the Chair and asked what was going on and he said that the Dems had gotten kicked our of 2 restaurants so we were all going to meet in the shade on the other side of the parking lot to regroup.
Turns out, we weren't kicked out "because we were Dems" although in Paulding I would not have doubted that. The Executive Committee had not let the restaurant know that the time we had reserved was changed and the restaurant had somebody else scheduled for the new time. (Pretty understandable if you ask me.) And the second restaurant just could not accommodate that many people.
That many people? How many people could possibly have been there if usually there are only 8-18? Well, while standing in the shade, listening to Shawn Harris, the man who I hope will take Marjorie Taylor Greene down for CD 14 AND for the rest of the country (you're welcome), I TRIED to count how many people there were. I finally had to give up and just estimate. I think there were easily 65-75 people there. That was a crowd numbering more people than we have seen before! Not only that, but in Paulding County Georgia, some of those people were independents and some were actually Republicans!
The people who were there were really fired up and ready to do something. The next job is to make sure that they are contacted and given chances to volunteer. I'm trying to help the current executive board see the necessity of doing that, and I hope they will because we will be able to knock so many doors and call so many people!
We have a chance and we're not going back! When we fight, we WIN!!!
