I assume, and really I know how dangerous that could be, that this guy is very much out on the fringe, not a person with any pull, but an agitator. I know little about him but suspect he talks a cold view of the world and probably does not feel much for his fellow human beings.
Is Vance under his spell? Perhaps, and that would not surprise me as Vance seems one seriously odd character to me.
The one thing that seems clear is people like this have tapped into something very dark in human nature and really seem to get a thrill out of attempting to manipulate it and see what happens.
