The charmer in question is none other than Mr.Jim Jones,
late of Berkeley, CA, shortly before the notorious Kool-Aid
and .45 party. I'd been reading a little about Jonestown and there was something so... troubling about the whole thing.
I'd heard for many years about the CIA's's moving their "brain-washing" or "mind control" experiments of the 60's and 70's out of the prisons, colleges, and the military and into "cults", where the Church Commission was unlikely to stumble, and some reasonably credible people were saying that Jonestown was one of those cults.
Anyway, I had a powerful mental image of those last moments at Jonestown, and that pushed me into the depths of a severe attack of morbid thinking. The seemingly benign Postman with his psychotic inner voice seemed as good a fellow as any to communicate that particular feeling. Why I wanted to spread my misery in that fashion I can only blame on a terrible case of selfishness and temporary insanity.
Fun question, by the way
