I never thought of the line as a slant against Madonna specifically, but as a general statement about current (pop) culture and the bleaker elements of the status quo, esp. in America. And frankly, even if it was, I would say she more or less deserved/s it. Her music is utterly banal and overtly commercial - check her recent obliteration of American Pie and the video that goes along with it to see just how low Madonna continues to sink. I don't give a shit how rich she is - it's an embarassment...
And the line was absolutely brilliant, one of my favorites on the record and ever put to a song...
