Many artists allow, or at least don't discourage, the taping and trading bootleg copies of their live shows. The Grateful Dead, Phish, Dave Matthews and my favorite band The Tragically Hip are examples. In fact IMHO the success of Dave Matthews may in fact be a direct result of a sub-culture and word of mouth brought on by "bootlegging".
Despite having over 50 live "Hip" shows, I still bought the bands live CD when it came out.
