David and All,

Without trying to begin the firestorm that is `The Pros and Cons For Reparations For African Americans` - have you followed the renegade writings of David Horowitz and his speaking out against this issue? Putting the main debate to oneside, he put togther a pretty eloquent argument to state his case - yet he was bullied off a number of college campuses with the allegation he was Hitler reincarnate. (His book `Hating Whitey - And Other Progressive Causes` states his manifesto on the subject)

My question is, why are some groups of people seemingly loath to *debate* their points of view when a character such as Horowitz shows up (colleges are, supposedly, the last bastians of free speech)? In this case, anti-racism has become the new racism and Horowitz's voice is silenced because he isn't marching in lockstep with the cause(s) that they adhere to. He's tried to give them the engaged debate that they seem to have been asking for - and now (to use his words) they're employing Racial McCarthyism to ridicule him and his ideas. It's now no longer `reds under the bed` - but `racism in the head`.

After all this - do you really belive that `vigorous freewheeling speech` could make a serious comeback, or is Horowitz the first to be the victim of the `herd of independent minds` that dictated him and his ideas off campus?

As Ever,
Richard

PS: - Does anyone have any opinion of the fact that Gore Vidal could be observing the execution of Tim McVeigh if/when it happens? Also, could I recommend the Christopher Hitchens book `No One Left To Lie To`. The guy took a lot of flak from his former bretheren on the left and is a pretty fair deconstruction of the Clinton legacy.
