Icon But Grandma..I WANT to be a Beatle

: It was 1965, in the Montreal Forum, and I was sitting with my dad (who hated the whole thing), and brother Lloyd; great seats, mid-section, and although they appeared blurry (my myopia had just set in, and I left my glasses at home!)..after about 10 other groups who did one or two songs each...(the Bill Black's Combo was the final one),at last, amongst a roar of screams...THE BEATLES!! They began with "Twist and Shout"..there were continual camera flashes from the press, and privileged others stage-side, creating a strobe effect throughout the concert.

: The obnoxious fast-talking DJ announcer who introduced them, proclaimed the winner of a drawing the radio station had before the show. A shy oriental girl, who received the prize, was asked who was her favourite Beatle.

:    "George Harrison", she announced to a thunderous wave of like -thinking young girls screaming in approval. My favorite too, I thought. He was my guitar heroe at the time.

:    Mid-way through the show, and I don't recall the song, John announced that for whatever the tune was, "Geoughe is gonna need a change of geetah"....George then proceeded to take off the trademark Gretsch Country Gentleman, and switch to a Gretsch Chet Atkins model (best I can remember..it definitely was a cut-away, red, and the stage light caused a great reflection off the pick-guard). All this...to yet ANOTHER roar of screams. Each movement by any-one of the Beatles could result in another wave of pandemonium; if they shook their hair; John stamped his feet imitating a spasmodic at one point, and THAT did it also.

:   I miss the Beatles, I miss John, and now I'll have to miss George. He was a gentleman, never took himself or the Beatles too seriously, and surely one of the most innovative guitarists of rock and pop music.

:   Well, George, my guitar gently weeps, and so do I.

:   Sleep peacefully, sweet angel.

Editor's Note (mine): No Gene, it was SEPTEMBER 8th 1964, at 4pm EST to be exact, that the Beatles played the Montreal Forum; that was the show I attended. They also played an evening concert that night.  I remember the day was drizzly, and overcast..and oh yes, as above, Dad DID detest the entire thing, and shoved his fingers in his ears when the Beatles came on (not, I think for the music, but to keep from going deaf from the screaming in the audience). In those days the "sound system" didn't exist, just a PA.  Now the bands have got their revenge by consistently deafening the audience; so the result is the same...my Dad would still need earplugs (can't win when it comes to Rock n' Roll ..Dad!).
