Yes, I owned one. It was pale yellow flecked with silver. Looked like a kitchen counter top from the 70's. I bought it for the same reason you seemed to have liked it. It had a great feel to it (I seemed to like the neck on it better than the Les Paul I had) and you could get the sound of a Fender Strat out of the thing. The guy I bought it from played mainly jazz and blues in the 70's. He needed the money to buy Christmas presents for his kids. He insisted I come to his house to play it before I bought it and I did. He pretty much begged me to buy the guitar but he seemed near tears to actually have to part with it. I think it was part of an important moment in his life that just seemed to slip through his fingers. The way those moments can sometimes. His kids played around us while he showed it to me and if I were him I would have sold the guitar too. People sometimes misplace their priorities in life but personally I'd cut off my arm to help someone I care about and it was obvious this guy felt the same way. Sorry for looking back like that but the night I spent at his house playing with his kids and handing the guitar back and forth meant more to me than the guitar. We had some drinks, played some songs, shared some stories and it was just a hell of a time. The guitar had a small dent near the bottom of the body. He told me he had been playing jazz in a club one night back in the 70's and a fight broke out. The skirmish had moved up close to the stage and when one of the yahoo's throwing punches tried to climb up onto the stage he swung the guitar at him. He missed unfortunatly and the momentum carried him right round till he smashed the guitar right into the baby grand piano. He'd had too much to drink that night and needless to say the club owner was fairly unhappy with him whacking his baby grand. The Marauder was a low end Gibson that, according to the guy I bought it from, had those pick-ups to give it a smoother, sweeter sound than the Les Paul. A sound that some jazz players of the time would favor. That's about all I know about it.

: T'was just at one of my favorite guitar stores just now and found a mid 70's Gibson Marauder (sp?) and I played it and I LOVED it. I've been in the market for a new guitar lately but this one has really nasal sounding mids, smooth playing and is really odd looking. Anyone ever own one? Can anyone tell me more about the weird plastic covered pickups?
: It's all original save one really cool modification. It has a three way switch to activate the two pickups (one single, one double coil) and the mini toggle allows the double to split to give it a really honky strat-esque sound one wouldn't expect from this guitar. The only thing I didn't like was the Flying V headstock which really makes it look goofy. Anyway, have a great day.
