I just purchased both yesterday, and Kent could not be more correct. These items should be essential listening. Given many people think that the film was purely a vehicle for Robbie Robertson (which I partly agree with)if you see past that and watch the intensity of the performances, not only of The Band, but of the all star group of guests. Seeing Van Morrison kicking up his legs during an unbelievable version of "Caravan" is simply brilliant. The late Rick Danko's heart wrenching vocal delivery of "It Makes No Difference" is yet another gem on this DVD/Video.
The 4 CD boxed set which has been entirely remastered by Robertson brings you into that Thanksgiving night 25 years ago. After listening to the music and watching the film it is hard to believe that an ensemble with 3 such versatile and talented vocalists will never perform those songs again.Richard Manuel committed suicide in '86,Rick Danko died of an appearent heart attack in 1999,and throat cancer has left Levon Helm with a hoarse rasp as a speaking voice and does not sing at all in the new group of musicians he currently performs with.Even if you only like The Band for their FM radio staples like "Cripple Creek" and "The Weight" invest in these new releases they will not disappoint.
