He chose to go where his dog was..how very precious, and a great choice, in my opinion !
Still a gridlock in Oregon, I'm afraid. Now, in theory, it's perfectly legal in that state, and the Oregon Medical Society would not prosecute a physician. The feds won't either, but...here's the loophole; they get the MD's through the DEA, and the radar signal they pick up is the narcotic or other substance (though it's usually always morphine or equivalent) large dosing. No DEA license..no practice. Sanctions etc...will follow. I don't know of too many physicians,no matter how well intentioned that would still go ahead.
Now...and this may not be common knowledge..call it an "insiders" view, the big "E" is still practiced (I suspect more widely than known), in hospitals and sickbeds around this country, with patients' and family awareness of this...in disguise. Usually, it is the resultant act of pain control...just more aggressive pain control. There was a VERY controversial letter to the editor, in JAMA about 15 yrs ago, entitled something like, "Goodnight Debi" or something like that, written by an anonymous source (sounded like a surgical resident making night rounds), in which the author describes making a humanitarian decision (this one, clearly NOT with the patient's consent), to permanently eliminate the pain of a young cancer patients' dying moments with a significant payload of morphine. The responses back to JAMA went on and on for months, with both sides of the euthanasia issue doing heated battle. Some even went so far as to insist that JAMA cough up the name of the author, so that this person could be prosecuted for murder. Anyways, this practice has taken place, and likely will continue in some form. The federal government, aside from extending their tentacles still further into the amount of people and thought control they can exert, may be more justifiably motivated in preventing abuse of humane euthanasia, and it can be a very slippery slope, as one might imagine; thus, the roadblocks to a comprehensive euthanasia policy in this country.
