Not implying actually--it really is my contention that Grohl was a larger shaping influence in the music than Cobain.  Cobain had these trippy near-surreal death-obsessed lyrics, and a singing style that I liked for the type of music, but when I listen to Nirvana in terms of the structure(s) of the songs, that sounds like Grohl all the way to me.

I don't claim to have read any authority on the matter, or to be one--just saying what I hear in the bands.  Loved Nirvana, but Cobain was no John Lennon.  Love Foo Fighters (now come on, who else is out there fighting foo for us?) but I don't think Grohl is a Ringo.

That constant movement from quiet to loud to quiet to loud--that was of course the band copying The Pixies and The Pogues.

I think of Grohl as exerting a shaping influence on what otherwise would be just another poet wannabe's cryptic writings.  A fabulous partnership.

To me, a better comparison might be to Roger Waters and David Gilmore--although Gilmore isn't much of a lyricist in my book.  Hmm.  Can't think of a really good comparison.  Maybe the Alice In Chains dudes?  But which one is Staley and which is Cantrell?  And has anybody noticed that records released solo by these guys just haven't gone anywhere?  (Of course Staley is dead now.)

I did like that you responded!  Tell me what you think of the above.

I'm off to buy more tinfoil.
