Thank you all for your concern. We weathered Wilma with little trauma. Hurricanes that hit during the day are a little easier to deal with. Lost all of the fence and half of the tree in the front yard, but no damage to the house. The roof didn't even make a sound. Thanks again for your help, Dan! The electricity went out and we were without water for a day and then under a boil water alert. We were incredibly lucky in that the weather the first few days after were nice and cool so removing and piling up the debris on the swale for pickup was not the usual sweaty ordeal. It did take three days. After finishing what we could do and with the prospect of the electricity not being restored till Nov. 22nd, we contemplated getting a generator. Not for very long. Generators are really really noisy and stinky. Plus, getting gas was a major problem. We were all told that there was plenty of gas, which there was, except that there was no way of pumping it. So we decided instead of spending money on a generator and gas (to run one for a week averages over a hundred dollars) we would all (including the dog) go on vacation and visit a friend of John's that had moved to Panama City and had been bugging us to visit him for the last 4 years. Stayed at his parent's house which is in St. Andrews, founded in 1847, right on the water. We also took our neighbors, their two kids and three dogs and they stayed for a couple of days and then they had to get back to work. We were able to stay for over a week and then last Sunday started wending our way back to Ft. Lauderdale. And the electricity was still out. Our plan was to be back on Tuesday. On Monday evening we got the news that the electricity was back on!!! We really didn't think we would be that lucky. Kim missed two days of school, I missed 3 days of work and John has decided to change careers and gave notice at his job. And life goes on.
