IFC has a documentary on right now called "Festival Express." It's about a train journey back in 1970 with The Band, Janis Joplin, The Grateful Dead, Buddy Guy and other musicians. A concert promotion threw them on a train together and had them take a musical journey.I'm watching it and a few things have hit me. One is how I hope every musician out there really appreciates their skill. My old man can play almost every musical instrument there is, while I can't play one. In other words, out of all our family, he drew the artistic brain while I drew the black and white one. Through my lifetime, my biggest regret is and will be for some time, not being able to learn how to play a musical instrument. Though, on the other hand, I do know each of us are put here on this earth for a purpose and if lucky, get to serve that purpose. Myself, I've been lucky enough to serve my purpose. To be a bit self-indulgent, my purpose was to be able to exist among the most terrible things found in life, examine them and be able to function, just like so many of my fellow coppers. I've been lucky (if that is the right word) enough to do things that have made a difference to other people. One time I found a few drops of blood that ended up being instrumental in convicting a man for the murder of a pregnant woman. Why do I mention this? I mention it because this is one reason why people like DB are so very important to all of us. People like DB make ART. They make the things that pull us through the dark to the light, even if sometimes they make dark things to make us go through that dark to see the light and appreciate the light even more so. So those that can make art, keep on making that art, and not just for yourself, but for those of us who have a hard time doing so. We all need it.
