I preordered the deluxe edition quite a while back & was delighted when it landed in my mailbox. Mine is numbered below the 8,000 mark. (The number is in a secret envelope, among the postcards.)For years I have played those two discs (mashed together on one CDR, along with "Nobody's Child") while cooking. Somehow the music just seemed to fit the activity. Love the songs, love the energy, and especially love the idea of these five (later four) guys sitting around the kitchen, cooking up songs with a fair degree of speed. Things seem more laid back than usual, and a spirit of fun prevails, though the albums are not without depth. "Nice" is the word I'd use, though I mean its older definition . . . something like "precise," "fitting," or "exact."Nice.
Herring405PS: Of course, for me, it's hard to go wrong with Jeff Lynne. From his work with the Idle Race, to The Move, to ELO, to the Harrison/Petty/Orbison/Wilburys stuff, to the Beatles/Macca stuff, to the solo work and later ELO album (Zoom), and the posthumous Harrison one, and of course the tribute concert for George . . . I love the guy's voice, his playing, and his production. I wish he would do more of it. And I quite enjoy the new band L.E.O. which has formed as an "homage" to Lynne's work, with members of Jellyfish, Hanson, and other "power pop" groups working with that cat named Bleu. Again, a real spirit of fun prevails . . . and the album ("Alpacas Orgling") is . . . nice.
