Kevin,Sure, the Brooce influence is there, to a point, but if that was all I was after, I'd be listening to John Cafferty & Beaver Brown, early Cougar/Mellencamp, and scores of other pretenders to the throne, but I don't. As you rightfully point out, The Hold Steady are an "impassioned bar band, with smart lyrics and a praise worthy live set". As I survey the music scene (and my glimpse is only that, a glimpse), I find those qualities to be in pretty short supply. By and large, passion, smarts, and sweat are what I'm in need of. Originality is terrific, but hard to come by. I respect your taste greatly, Kevin, and should you find any new groundbreaking bands, I'm all ears!Peter T.
