What a price we pay in lives and misery in order to maintain our precious right to bear arms. For some, gun ownership is inextricably intertwined with tradition, self and group identity, and a perceived sense of personal security. It's such an emotional hold for these folks. I've never felt the tug of it though these gun owners are all around me. And the irony is that genuine security doesn't come from firepower, it comes from access to healthcare (and mental healthcare), environmental and consumer protection, and a well-funded social safety net. But that wouldn't fit on a bumpersticker and it flies in the face of the macho, rugged individualist ethos that they wear on their sleeves. It's difficult to see anything changing.
