Honesty cuts both ways. Those that oppose guns need to be honest that
the vast majority of gun crime is committed by people who illegally
possess those guns. More legislation and stricter control of guns isn't
going to help, because they're already out there illegally and the
criminals aren't going to turn theirs in because of a new state or
federal law.The problem isn't that guns are legal. The problem is that criminals
break laws that would prevent them from having guns, and I've yet to see
anyone offer a solution that actually addresses that issue. Here's my take on it--a big chunk of the illegal gun grade goes along
with the illegal drug trade. Stop the war on drugs and then the soldiers
in that war don't need to be armed. Work toward removing the economic
and social conditions that foster the environment where an individual
feels that their best tool to provide for themselves is a gun.Full disclosure--I'm a gun owner, and I like to think a very responsible
one. I enjoy shooting sports, and I'm also convinced that the safety and
security of my family and property is safer because we have guns and are
trained in their proper usage and storage. I live in a nice area, but a
guy in the next subdivision stopped a home invasion because he was armed
(as was the invader, but no shots were fired). No one knows what the
invader's intentions were, but fortunately no one had to find out.Guns make some people uncomfortable, I get that. I don't want to sound
like an NRA echo chamber, because I'm not, I really dislike the NRA and
the Molon Labe type of folks, but there is little to fear from a
responsible gun owner.
