I did a whole lot of watching over the last 6-8 months, too much probably. So here's a few things to look for and avoid:

Just finished the first 10 episodes of Narcos on Netflix. It features the Colombian drug cartels with a focus on Pablo Escobar. A good history lesson and I'm humbled by the courage displayed by so many in the Colombian government who refused to be corrupted. "A"

Our Man in Tehran: Also available on Netflix. A documentary that recounts the Iranian Hostage Crisis of 1979 and once again I'm reminded of the bravery shown by Canada as they sheltered and aided in the freedom of Americans. Oh Canada indeed! "A-"

Generation War: I got this German film at our local library. It's sort of a 4.5 hour German version of Band of Brothers. Hard to obtain but worth it. "A"

The Attacks of 26/11: Watched this for the second time recently. The most brutally violent film I may have ever seen as it recounts the terrorist attacks in Mumbai from 2008. Utterly compelling and hard hitting, not for the squeamish. (A)

Other recommendations over the last year or so:

Diplomat: A French film that recounts the saving of Paris from Nazi demolition at the end of WW2 by a Swedish diplomat.

Broadchurch Season 1: 8 episodes on Netflix, set in coastal Great Britain, and it concerns the murder of a boy found on a beach.

The Wrecking Crew: The all-star team of musicians who you've sang a long to but never really knew who they were.

Felony: An Aussie film on Netflix which concerns a drunken policeman who kills a boy while driving.

'71 (as in 1971): During the Troubles in Northern Ireland, a British soldier must fight his way through Catholic territory.

The Killing: A Netflix cop drama set in Seattle. A bit long but worth watching for the performances.

Nightcrawler: Jake Gyllenhaal as a sleazy, tabloid reporter who does anything to succeed.

A Most Violent Year: An honest businessman struggling in the corruption which was and probably is New York City.

The Honorable Woman: An 8 part BBC series on Netflix with Maggie Gyllenhaal as an industrialist/philanthropist who is determined to aid the Israeli/Palestinian divide.

The Fall: Gillian Anderson as a police inspector in Northern Ireland. Damn she's great!

Bloodlines: On Netflix. A sprawling mess of a family in Florida with Kyle Chandler trying to be a decent man.

Luther: Great British cop show.

Black Mirror: 6-7 episodes. A modern day Twilight Zone, but not for the faint-of-heart.

Stinkers:

The One I Love, John Wick, Lorna's Silence, Dear White People, Leviathan, Birdman, St. Vincent, A Walk Among The Tombstones, Blue Jasmine, and all Wes Anderson films. I just don't get this guy at all!

I avoided the fair-to-middling stuff.
