Back in college I really became a fan of Timbuk 3 and have always felt that they have been one of the most vastly underrated bands/duos, both lyrically and sonically, and were cursed by the demon of the label "one hit wonder."
And to think of his integrity where he could have made millions by licensing their hit song The Future's So Bright and he refused to do so. Wow.
Now, why I say how this is funny-odd is because last night I watched a movie called Marie-Britt Was Here (a nice little feel-good movie about a 63-year-old woman that moves to an economically ravaged town to become a youth activities director) and it closed with the song Closer to Fine by the Indigo Girls. Their song was a hit at the end of my time in college and it took me back to how the same music of one's youth is perceived, or at least in my case, so much different than after a person has aged.
Don't get me wrong - it's still good - but it takes on a different context. For me, Timbuk 3 and The Indigo Girls back then were at the start of my professional journey and seeking of that journey (you know, prepare for that life-occupation, then seek out that occupation, get that occupation and then work it and retire). It's like at the start, this music is tied to the unknown of the road to soon be followed and the later the one leg of the journey has been completed the music is still there but now seen different.
Oh, life eh?.....
