San Diego, 1987. naive little 19 or 20 yearold, finally fleeing the lame nests of 'Hottubistan'...and Boomtown was all over the radio down there, and that reverb-soaked guitar line just reeled me in. and the guy with that world-weary & knowing voice was singing about drugs! how cheeky! i remember laughing as i read the album liner notes, how they'd changed the lyrics to 'deals dope out of Danny's', no doubt to thwart the sharks. surfed and smoked a lot of brown grass that enlightening summer while that album played again and again. got drunk with strangers, too, and i remember actually singing that line to 'em as i did.

there was no second album. :(

but then one of the Davids put out a solo album. and it was good. somehow it was the perfect soundtrack to LA when i'd drive down there to see family. and then he put out another one! and it was even better. i'd moved back to SF by then, and the guy was so cool he even played a free show at Slim's in (i think) '92 on my birthday. happy happy me. it was over a decade before i got to see him again. you make me wait so long again, i break your fingers. woo-hoo!
