"Some of the foundational skills are self-regulation, deferral of gratification, and organization".

Precisely what driving lessons early on would teach. Internal models fed into the cerebellum to be used later on as unconscious behavior prompts would do just that. Not incidentally, we have lost 983,000 lives aged 16-24 on our nation's highways 1913-2017.  The metal ripping, glass-shattering, blood splattering, dream destroying, life taking carnage continues, and will until we address the problem in the education of our youngest, mind-forming children

Socio-economic status weighs heavily among the causes of destructive adolescent behavior. Bad parenting, no parenting, absence of a stable adult community, all direct manifestations of the reverberating earthquake left by The Industrial Revolution, add to the behavior problems about which all thoughtful persons must be concerned.

I'm also aware of the threat to deep, life-changing reading the current use of flat screens poses. Sans changes, I see a virtual homelessness ahead for children around whom adults are too busy navigating a bevy of flat screens.

You must continue to fight for teacher's unions, the target of education privatizers.  They hold the key for centrally organizing solutions to numerous teacher concerns.

Confusion among parents, is exactly what those who seek to destroy public education want.

I'm somewhat aware of the shambles facing public education since the implementation of both Bush's and Obama's policies, resulting in standardized testing, for one, preceded by Koch brother efforts--too successful I might add--of privatizing public education, aided mightily by Gates, and a flood of like-minded, obscenely rich people.

Charter schools, vouchers, and public funds now going to religious schools speak ill for the future of public education, the ultimate protector of Democracy.

Two generations of brainwashing and we'll be faced with exactly the form of government our founders fled, lords and nobles, we now call oligarchs.  In short, Autocracy.

I am not surprised you get letters of appreciation, Peter. Your wanting to improve the lives of students and your obvious superior ability to do so is appreciated even here.
