I think Roger Stone said "Don't get in a pig fight with Trump because nobody knows how to fight in the muck like him. You'll lose."
Well, DeSantis, I think, is saddled with this task. Trump has already gone dirty saying if Ron runs against him he will release information about DeSantis that he won't want out there and he will be hurt by. Not sure what Donald has on Ron but I am sure DeSantis knows. You can bet Donald is not joking. Trump is not smart nor a card player so nothing is hidden...if he says it, he means it. He wants to bury DeSantis.
Trump believes he made DeSantis and that Ron belongs to him. If he runs against him that will be seen as disloyal and DeSantis will have to pay a heavy price for it. DeSantis could pull all kinds of stunts in Florida riding Trump's coattails but now he has to face him. Sure, he currently has the backing of most of the people you need to become the candidate but the Republican voters are not with him yet. Trump has a good 40% of them in his pocket. Not enough to win an election, but enough to do severe damage to other Republicans and the party. He knows it and he knows how gutless Republicans are.
Let's see what kind of fight the Republicans and DeSantis can put up against the MAGA loons.
