A very fair question, David.  Thank you for asking.  Hard to write too much today, but I'd say this, which might feel too general for the level of detail/clarity you may be seeking:

1)  I often find myself closer to religious Republicans on "moral" issues, that is for the ones who actually follow the teachings they purport to follow.  (And that's without any formal affiliation).  That can be from everything to marriage and value of it to lack of use of intoxicants to protection of children from the rougher aspects of our world until closer to an age of maturity.  That does NOT include, for me, pretending that gay people don't exist.  I really endeavor to treat everyone with respect and demonstrate that to my children.

2) On subject of economics, you might not remember, but I lived in Venezuela for a number of years in the 1990s, saw the rise of Chavez and and not-quite-Communist but very very Socialist regime that absolutely destroyed the economy of that country.  Don't even try to argue that because I know far more but won't write it all here.  Rory Carroll (The Guardian)'s book "Commandante" details this almost perfectly.  I see tons of parallels to that in actions taken is some left-leaning states, my former home state of Oregon in particular.  And I really love Oregon, but it has been destroyed in some of the cities, not so much by Kate Brown but rather by every mayoral regime (and that's the right word) in Portland since Sam Adams.  And while there is lots to criticize in my current home state of Texas (I don't like Greg Abbot's approach to abortion and I flat out oppose Dan Patrick on most issues), the oft-repeated canard that Abbott is trying to enforce a kind of "American Taliban" type of thing on Texans doesn't really hold water (in my opinion).   I do respect that many, including you, might not see it that way, and I think there's room for nuance there.  Hard to have that discussion in writing (especially if, like today, my bluetooth keyboard isn't tracking well - that's rough).  :-) I hope you perhaps got to hear Chuck Sam's podcast.  I think Chuck embodies a place in between those Left-Right views, probably slanting just slightly Left as he is a Democrat.  I think there's a lot to take from the combination of traditional values, which are almost inherently Conservative and a more modern take on society.  Hope I haven't offended in writing all that.  Such was not my intention.  Am planning to getting the book as it sounds really interesting to me.
