Reg,
Appreciate that. And I agree with you to a great extent. This is why my votes were were Hillary and then for Joe, somewhat holding my nose both times. I could not get behind the party that threw in with Trump. That said, at the state and local level, I see it a bit differently. And it's OK if for others that's still a "no go." From many Democrats, I witness intense fear of a Trumpification of the other side. And that's legitimate. I've discussed it even with my recently voting-age oldest son. But what I witness on the ground here in a pretty Republican area is a slow groundswell of "not Trump." I think that may be not seen by people in blue states, who also get the enormously anti-red state slanted media feeding them. (Don't worry, we get some anti-blue state stuff here, too, but I surmise less from local media given that Houston is a Democrat-led town).
This truly is an interesting area for discussion, especially right at the margins. From things I've seen David write before, I suspect he does not see it that way. And I suppose it's possible this is also informed from his time living in Austin. I don't really know. But I see and somewhat agree with some of the movement in society that the Right pushes back on. Likewise, and different from many nominal Independents (I'm not registered with either major party), I can clearly see what there is to push back on in MAGA. So it's complex.
