Peter T.,
I would say it is not uncommon for cliques to follow their main "leaders" and allow such people to direct their group. I would also suggest, that when it comes to cliques like the hyper-masculine ones, that it also attracts the type of person that favors that type of direction. So I don't think it is common for birds of the same feather to flock together and in doing so, they typically know what the group think limits are to be a "member."
Not only that, organizations will often create groups, units, and task forces that advertise and actively recruit these types of people from within the organization.
Strangely, it is not uncommon to hear police identify themselves of being "Type A" personalities, which is kind of comical when it comes to those that are easily led by others.
There really are all sorts of personalities and groups and the like. Like many others, I had a number of co-workers that preferred not to work around because of things like attitude, aggressiveness, and their thought on how to treat others. And usually, word of mouth will reveal who those types are.
Hope that sort of answered your questions.
