So, I don't think Bobby is the man, he really can't be if he is running as a Democrat and the party totally rejects him. For me, he's just another data point to observe to learn about how our political system is progressing...or regressing.
On his vaccine thoughts, well, he wrote a book that is essentially about how Fauci handled things during the pandemic. I have not read it, mainly my view of Fauci was he was in a tough position when the pandemic happened and dealing with a rather giant moron as president at the time. I would not have wanted to be in that position. I think few people would.
In the book a lot of vaccine stuff is addressed. He cites a lot of people. It's a lot to keep track of. So, I really did not want to read the book but did want to know what was in it...solution...have a scientist read the book and tell you his thoughts on what it says. Check out Dr. Wilson:
There are more videos, he goes chapter by chapter, pretty thorough. If I could have RFK Jr. sit down with a person to talk about vaccines, I would pick this guy. He would seem very capable of having the discussion with Bobby, which it seems a lot of other interviewers are not or won't.
Here's another great video of Dr. Wilson dissecting Joe Rogan's (not a fan by the way) interview with Bobby:
So, let me clarify again, my interest in RFK Jr. has nothing to do with his thoughts on vaccinations. This is not part of what I think is desperately wrong with our government nor the world. So, I personally see this as a side issue that, like abortion or immigration, attracts a lot of attention and weirdness.
I will also point out, even though I really support and enjoy his videos, at the top of the second video, Dr. Wilson puts up verbiage that labels Kennedy an anti-vaxxer, which by all of the data he appears not to be.
My thought here is that people have different takes on what an anti-vaxxer is. My take is an anti-vaxxer would not take a vaccination nor have his family vaccinated. They avoid or fight that tooth and nail. Bobby has taken many vaccinations, has his family vaccinated, gets his annual flu shots. He openly says he supports vaccinations, sees the good they do, and that he has never told anyone not to get a vaccination.
He does support the choice to decide if you want to take a vaccination, and he does support the idea that vaccinations be rigorously tested and that the companies that make them be held liable for any harm they may cause. He is a lawyer, I do think he speaks like a lawyer when discussing these things. This is at least part of the reason Dr. Peter Hotez gave for not wanting to discuss vaccines with Kennedy. He felt Bobby was a much more skilled debater and speaker than he is. This is likely true.
Personally, I would like to see Dr. Wilson hold Kennedy's feet to the fire on the vaccination things he has talked about.
OK, to your main point, that Kennedy is dangerous for openly discussing different ideas about vaccinations. I 100% agree with you that caution should be used if you get into this topic and you are a person of note. Do people listen to Bobby Kennedy and trust him? It seems they do. So, yes, he should use caution as he puts information out there so as not to create the idea or impression that there is more to fear than there actually is.
If I see something in what he has done in his vaccine discussions, it is to at times display a lack of caution. He has a weakness, and I think it is one I share, which is that he thinks that people will understand what he means when he speaks and when he is discussing theories, possibilities, and ideas and when he is discussing facts.
In what I have heard him say, I've never heard him bail out on his thoughts by saying "I'm just asking questions..." as say a FOX News host does. He only cites things that go back to what other sources have said and discusses that. He says always tries to avoid putting out any misinformation but if he has, he claims he will correct it.
This is why I spoke about the absolutist nature of the discourse we have in society now. People seem to feel that you must come out on one side or the other, that there can be no in-between.
So, yes, I feel that Bobby's place in the vaccine discussion is a weakness of his public persona. The truth is, during the pandemic, I heard his name coming up and being heavily used by some real nutty anti-vax people. I wondered what the hell that was about but at the time did not find it particularly interesting or important enough to look at. I had other things eating my attention.
So, really I've only got a couple of months that I have paid attention to his vaccine takes and his presidential campaign...which I knew immediately would trigger some Democrats. Trust me, Dan, I am not going to go down a vaccine rabbit hole with the nuts.
I think all presidential candidates have weaknesses. Some huge, Trump, some just due to age, Biden, some due to past comments or positions they have held. With Bobby Kennedy, I don't think he is nuts nor that he would drastically destroy our ability to use and create important vaccines. He's not anti-healthcare and he is not anti-science. I think the things he has put out there on vaccines would likely be overlooked had we not gone through a pandemic that created, and continues to create, a lot of turmoil in the world.
My take on where we should be going with that is too soothe that turmoil and bring things back to a place where people feel more comfortable in the world. Is he doing that? Well, not really but part of that is the people that want to talk to him desperately want to get him to say "frightening" things and then the is a large group of people that want to talk about him and they want to say "frightening" things about him.
I think he is a guy that could bring people together, from the crazies to the people who are thoughtful and sane. I think he understands foreign policy better and is a far better negotiator than anybody else the Democrats have. I watch the Right wing nuts praise him and laugh when he is given air time on their stations to describe why being a liberal and Democrat is a great thing.
So, I think there is much that is positive about him...then there is the vaccine stuff...which, generally, is a giant negative for him because much of what he has said is easy to turn against him and wow, the headline writers always go the most monstrous route.
I don't fear his vaccine thoughts, I believe he comes at it as a lawyer with the ideas of liability, accountability, and what you could do in a court of law. Should he dial that back, yeah, because today it does not play well.
