I agree with Scott. Whole-heartedly.

What's more, it's always puzzled me how fans of any given artist tend to think it's all right to use these message boards as a forum to publicly bash on the works of another artist. I don't understand it. I don't personally enjoy Madonna's work very often, but she's nothing if not a consummate entertainer. DB is one of my all-time favorite songwriters. However, if all I ever listened to were songs about people doing nasty shit to each other, or our corrupt government (and yes, I realize I'm being overly simplistic here for the sake of argument) I'd probably shoot myself.

It's yin and yang. Thought-provoking social/emotional commentary versus mind-numbingly catchy entertainment for entertainment's sake. I personally wouldn't want to give up either of them. Seems like sometimes people forget that one of the main purposes of art is to entertain...it ain't such a bad thing to be catchy and/or vacuous sometimes...
