IMO, as long as both major parties keep us frothing at the mouth over the "other" party, we are playing their game. Dems scream anyone but a republican, and the same goes for republicans, when in actuality, both groups are making the rules and passing the laws, allowing them to screw us royally. I'm sitting here in California looking at two inept choices (Bill Simon and Gray Davis). I'm a registered democrat, but I'll be damned if I'll let either one of these idiots and their freakin' parties force me to vote for someone I wouldn't share a cab with. When given the choice between tweedle-dee or tweedle-dum (which is just about always), I'll vote third party every time, if a third party were to ever get a decent percentage. The dems and repubs would have to become more responsive.
