Does anyone remember that line from Pogo? It sure rings true for me. In a way, I don't blame Bush. The American public knew, or should have known, that nothing in this man's character or past could have prepared him for the presidency. Bush admitted long ago to not being intellectually curious, to not travelling the world, to not reading for God's sake! He still does not read the newspaper. The president sees things as either black or white and that ain't reality. Bush is America: lazy, insular, and incurious. And this reminds me of the great Jam song, "Going Underground", (thanks to Paul Weller):

...What you see is what you get
You've made your bed, you better lie in it
You choose your leaders and place your trust
As their lies wash you down and their promises rust
You'll see kidney machines replaced by rockets and guns
And the public wants what the public gets
But I don't get what this society wants
I'm going underground, (going underground)...
