Larry King Loses In Cable Ratings

NEW YORK (AP) - In another milestone for the ascendant Fox News Channel, the political talk show "Hannity & Colmes" has eclipsed CNN's "Larry King Live" in the ratings for the first time. The program with conservative commentator Sean Hannity and his more liberal foil, Alan Colmes, has averaged 1.65 million viewers in October to King's 1.58 million, according to Nielsen Media Research. Fox surpassed CNN in full-day ratings for the first time earlier this year and can now boast that it is the top-rated cable news network throughout prime-time. "Hannity & Colmes" benefits from being on directly after "The O'Reilly Factor," which had a bigger audience this month than rivals Connie Chung and Phil Donahue combined.
The 10 p.m. hour is another battlefield for Fox and CNN. Fox's Greta Van Susteren, who jumped from CNN earlier this year, averaged 1.32 million viewers and Aaron Brown's "Newsnight" on CNN averaged 1.18 million viewers. CNN spokeswoman Christa Robinson said Tuesday that her network remains solidly behind King, whose show - like most cable news programs in a busy news month - showed growth from September. "It continues to be unrivaled in its newsmaking interviews," Robinson said. "'Larry King Live' continues to be invaluable to CNN." Although remaining behind Fox overall, CNN had one bragging point recently: It beat Fox in ratings on Thursday, when the capture of the Washington-area snipers elevated news network viewership. Fox News Channel representatives did not immediately return calls for comment.
