My lovely bride bought me a Gateway DVD Recorder for Christmas last year. It, too is a stand-alone unit. I've managed to edit and record bunches of Steeler games from my old VHS tapes, a lot of her family's home movies on VHS, and even quite a few pre-recorded VHS movies. The recorder is able to sense copyright protection and will not allow recording of these tapes.
