In a very brief nutshell, the "Southern Strategy" was a strategy by the GOP to attract Southern democrats who were angry with the Democratic party for its pursuit of the Civil RIghts Act and voting reforms and offered them a place to go out of their anger.
So we have a bunch of biggot crossovers from the Dems?
I'm not buying the Byrd "out of context". Lott had 2 Dems at the speech he made that thought nothing of the comment until the mainstream press got it. Byrd made the statement and got a pass on it. Pretty simple
