We know that war will involve the deaths of many of our troops, innumerable civilians and possibly destabilize the region, the consequences of which no one can predict.
Yes, but the consequences of doing nothing and leaving the man in power cannot be predicted either, and those have the potential to be far more dangerous. Not to mention, Saddam has consistently failed to live up to his obligations under his surrender agreement from 1991 as well as a bevy of UN resolutions since then (hence the sanctions), which in my mind means we never really stopped being at war with Iraq.
